JAMES GRIFFIN

Carved for James Griffin, of "Bread" in 1973.

James came to my home in Hollywood with James Burton, when I was working on J.B's TCB Tele. He said, "I'm gonna have to have you carve one for me." Well, I was used to hearing this and didn't think much of it. 2 days later, I got a call from Hollywood Music saying James had bought a stratocaster that morning and wanted it delivered to my home... COOL.

James called me later and we discussed what he wanted on it. I suggested a griffin motive, since his name was Griffin. He liked that and left the rest of the design up to me. I put a big old english "G" on it, a mermaid up in the right corner, a merman in the lower left (they're sort of reaching to each other), a "Gordian Knot" next to the bridge and carried the Griffin deal into the pickguard. I discovered later that what I thought was a griffin (i.e. a winged lion was something else - a griffin is a lion's body with a bird's head & wings) James didn't seem to mind. And I thought it turned out pretty cool.
