The LUNARCASTER

Commissioned by David Arnold of London, England

Dave contacted me with an idea of themes for 4 guitars:

1. marines raising flag at iwo jima 1945

2. Moon Landing 1969

3. Sebastiao Salgado's picture of the brazilian gold mine

4. Salvador Dali Atomicus.

First I asked him if he was on crack. After he assured me was not, I said I thought 2 of his suggestions wouldn't lend themselves to 3 dimensional expression on a guitar body. But the moon landing and Iwo Jima themes had promise. He wanted the famous Buzz Aldrin on the moon photo with the reflection in his face shield. For the pickguard, he thought the landing craft along with the date and the "One small step..." quote.

The face shield reflection was done with decopage. I printed and glued a photo to the wood and lacquered over it. The Earth is seen beyond the horizon. The whole scene was airbrushed with tinted lacquers. A golden oak stain on the ash body and 5 coats of clear lacquer completes the finish.

Dave bought this brand new Telecaster on line in the U.S. and had it shipped to me, sight unseen. He did likewise with a Gibson Les Paul for the Iwo Jima instrument.
